Azmak River | Akyaka Muğla

Azmak River is one of the natural beauties located in the Akyaka town of Muğla. This river is particularly famous for its clear and cool waters and is seen as a natural paradise. Azmak River actually consists of several small water sources and flows through Akyaka before reaching the sea.

Azmak River has many names, but the most well-known is “Kadın Azmağı” (Women’s Azmak). This name originates from the old times when women used to wash their laundry here. The word “Azmak” means a wild or untamed water, often referring to water that comes from an unknown or underground source.

The length of the Azmak River is 1800 meters, and its depth can reach up to 10 meters in some places. The water temperature varies between 8-10 degrees Celsius, making swimming quite challenging. 🙂

Many species such as mullet, sea bass, trout, water snakes, turtles, otters, ducks, geese, ruddy shelducks, and moorhens live in this river. Hunting and fishing are prohibited in the Azmak River as it is a specially protected area. It is also a 1st-degree natural conservation site.

20% of the Azmak River consists of mineral water. Therefore, its water is believed to have healing properties. According to a legend, those who enter the water become rejuvenated and find cures for their ailments.

Boat Tours: Boat tours on the Azmak River are among the most popular tourist activities in the area. These tours offer visitors the opportunity to explore the river and its surrounding natural beauty. As of summer 2024, the price of a boat tour is 100 TL.

Swimming: Swimming in the river is quite popular. However, the cold water makes swimming a challenge for the brave.
