Kurşunlu Monastery – Kuşadası Davutlar
The Kurşunlu Monastery, believed to be a Byzantine structure from the 11th century, is located approximately 10 km from the Davutlar region of Kuşadası. During the 8th century, due to the intense Christian migration, clergymen fleeing persecution built churches and monasteries in this area where they could hide and practice their religious rituals. The church, named “Panagia Kursunniatissa” by the Greeks, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Exact Location: Davutlar, 09430 Kuşadası/Aydın
It is believed that the name “Kurşunlu” comes from the lead that covers the top of the structure. Despite significant damage, some parts of the monastery, which is thought to have been used until the 19th century, are still visible.
Within the monastery, there are structures such as a church, administrative building, refectory, dormitory, western monk cells, southern monk cells, a terrace western courtyard, and an infirmary. Additionally, there is a burial chapel (necropolis) located 100 meters east of the monastery. The buildings, which have suffered considerable damage over time, have undergone restoration work in recent years. Along with its surrounding natural beauty, Kurşunlu Monastery particularly attracts the interest of nature walk and trekking enthusiasts.
